Healing properly after wisdom teeth removal in Arleta, California, is essential to prevent complications and ensure a comfortable recovery. Following your post-operative instructions carefully will help you manage discomfort, minimize swelling and avoid issues such as dry socket or infection. Dr. Simon Imanuel and our team are here to support you during your recovery, and we encourage you to contact United Family Dental Group at 818-899-9999 with any concerns or questions.

Immediate Care After Surgery

During the first 24 hours after your procedure, focus on protecting the surgical site.

  • Do not rinse, spit or touch the area with your fingers or tongue. These actions can dislodge the blood clot that is forming and interfere with healing.
  • Use the gauze provided to help manage bleeding, and replace it as needed.
  • Some oozing is normal, but if bleeding is heavy or persistent, please call our office immediately.
  • Use ice packs on the outside of your cheeks in 20-minute intervals to reduce swelling and ease discomfort. Swelling typically increases over the first two to three days before it begins to subside.
  • After 24 hours, you may switch to warm, moist heat to relax the jaw and promote circulation.

Pain Management & Medication

Begin taking pain medication within a few hours of your surgery, before the anesthesia fully wears off.

  • Over-the-counter options such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen are usually effective, but our dentist may prescribe stronger medication if needed.
  • Take all medications exactly as directed.
  • If you were prescribed antibiotics, complete the entire course to prevent infection.

Diet & Hydration Guidelines

  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids, but do not use a straw for at least five days, as the suction can disturb the surgical sites.
  • Stick to soft, cool foods during the first stages of recovery. Suitable options include yogurt, smoothies (without a straw), applesauce and mashed potatoes.
  • Avoid hard, crunchy or sticky foods such as popcorn, chips, rice and candy, which can become trapped or irritate the area.

Oral Hygiene & Activity Restrictions

  • Avoid brushing directly over the surgical site for the first 24 hours.
  • After the first day, you may gently rinse your mouth with a warm saltwater solution several times a day, especially after meals. Use ½ teaspoon of salt in an 8-ounce glass of warm water.
  • Refrain from strenuous activity and exercise for at least three to four days. Physical exertion can increase bleeding and swelling.
  • Rest with your head elevated and resume normal activities gradually.

What to Watch For

It is normal to experience some bruising, swelling and mild discomfort. However, if you develop a fever, experience severe pain after the third day or notice foul-tasting drainage, contact our office promptly. These may be signs of infection or dry socket.
